Ceramic vs Porcelain vs Stoneware
Briefly introduce the difference for ceramic , porcelain and stoneware ?
Ceramic = the big umbrella term.
Stoneware & Porcelain are two specific types of fired ceramic clay bodies.
1. Ceramic (General Category)
Definition: Any inorganic, non-metallic material shaped then hardened by high-temperature firing in a kiln.
Scope: Includes earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, terracotta, pottery, brick, tiles etc.
Raw material: All clay-based mixtures.
Property range: From porous, low-strength clay pots to dense, impermeable fine china.
Simple sentence: All porcelain and stoneware are ceramics, but not all ceramics are porcelain/stoneware.
2. Stoneware
Raw material
Stoneware clay (impure clay with silica & feldspar; contains iron/mineral impurities).
Firing temperature
1180℃ ~ 1280℃ (mid-high fire)
Key physical traits
Non-porous (no glaze needed to hold liquid; unglazed stoneware still won’t absorb water)
Opaque, thick, sturdy, chip-resistant
Color naturally grey, tan, brown, dark beige from iron content
Matte or rustic texture common; thicker walled
Common uses
Mugs, dinner plates, baking dishes, crocks, fermentation jars, restaurant tableware, kitchen utensils
Pros & Cons
✅ Microwave, dishwasher, oven safe; durable for daily heavy use
❌ Not translucent; heavier than porcelain; rough raw body
3. Porcelain
Raw material
Kaolin clay (pure white kaolin + feldspar + quartz; very low iron content)
Firing temperature
1280℃ ~ 1450℃ (highest firing among the three)
Key physical traits
Fully vitrified, zero water absorption
Thin walls are translucent (hold up to light, light shines through slightly)
Bright pure white body naturally
Smooth, delicate, fine texture
Two grades
Hard porcelain: tableware, bone china (add bone ash for brighter white & translucency)
Soft porcelain: decorative crafts
Common uses
Fine china sets, tea cups, decorative vases, figurines, luxury tableware, lab porcelain ware
Pros & Cons
✅ Elegant, stain-resistant, easy to clean
❌ More brittle than stoneware; thinner pieces crack easier under impact; pricier
